While assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division, the Manchus deployed to Iraq multiple times from 2004 to 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Manchus fought valiantly in some of the most notable battles of the Iraq War.

The 1-9 IN Manchu’s fought in the 2004 Battle of Fallujah and the 2007 Battle of Ramadi, while 4-9 IN Manchu’s fought in the 2007 Battle of Baqubah. In 2008, the Army reflagged 1-9 IN to 1-12 IN and moved the former Manchus to Fort Carson.

From 2008 onwards, 2-9 IN would rotate through Korea multiple times as part of 2nd Infantry Division until an Army-wide reorganization effort led to the 2-9 IN’s deactivation in 2015. 4-9 IN deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and again in 2018 in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel.

4-9 IN is the last remaining element of the 9th Infantry Regiment and deployed once again in support of Operation Inherent Resolve in 2021, furthering the tradition of ‘Keep up the Fire.’
